Used records Trade-ins Listening bar Turntable repair

Records come back around.

Returnpath buys, sells and trades secondhand vinyl at 41 Spindle Street. Every record is graded on a card you can read, played once at the bar, then priced by that grade. Not by a hunch.

Came in this week

Eight records, each one cleaned, sleeved and played once

These came across the trade-in counter in the last seven days. The sticker says the grade and the price. The grade card says what the grade means. Hover or tab along the crate to pull a sleeve up; on a phone, tap it.

  • LP · Near Mint Gatefold. The strings sit right up front.

  • LP · Very Good Plus Light scuffs on side B. Plays clean.

  • LP · Very Good Crackle in the run-in. Ring wear on the sleeve.

  • LP · Very Good Plus Piano trio. Lyric sheet still inside.

  • LP · Near Mint Horns, congas, one long side-B jam.

  • LP · Good Plus Warm, with some hiss. A good first copy.

  • 7-inch · VG+ The B-side is the one.

  • 12-inch · Very Good Dance mix. Corner bump on the sleeve.

Gone when it's gone? Only this copy. The next one that comes in is graded on the same card and priced the same way. Nothing here is held back to make it look scarce.

The trade-in loop

Six stops, the same for one single or four hundred LPs

This is the whole system, drawn as the circle it really is. A record you sell us goes out to someone else, and one day it may come back to the counter. Press a stop to see what happens there, or step around in order.

Six stops, one loop. They are all written out below, in order.

  1. Stop 1 Bring

    Bring them in.

A bag, a box, one single. Under fifty records, just walk in. For more, book a slot below so the counter is clear when you arrive.

    • Carry them upright, not stacked flat.
    • Leave inner sleeves and inserts where they are. They count.
    • Tapes are fine too. CDs we don't take.
  2. Stop 2 Grade

    Graded in front of you.

Every disc comes out under the daylight lamp. The disc and the sleeve get separate grades, written on a card that stays with the record.

    M
Mint. Sealed and unplayed. The sticker says so when it is.
    NM
Near Mint. Played with care. Nothing to see or hear.
    VG+
Very Good Plus. Faint scuffs under the lamp. Plays clean.
    VG
Very Good. Light noise between tracks. Some ring wear.
    G+
Good Plus. Crackle and hiss, but no skips.
    F
Fair. Skips or a warp. It goes home with you, or to recycling.
  3. Stop 3 Price

The price comes off the card.

We look up what that pressing last sold for here, adjust it by grade, and write the shelf price down. You get 40% of it in cash or 55% in store credit. You see every number before you say yes.

Worked example: a VG+ LP that sells here for $18
    Shelf price$18
    Cash, 40%$7.20
    Store credit, 55%$9.90

Say no to any record and it goes home with you. Looking is free.

  4. Stop 4 Restock

    Cleaned, sleeved, stickered.

Each record goes through the vacuum cleaning machine, into a fresh inner sleeve and a clear outer one. The sticker gets the grade, the price and the date it came in.

    • Into the crate within the week.
    • The grade card stays tucked behind the sleeve.
    • Price never changes once the sticker is on.
  5. Stop 5 Spin

    One side at the bar.

Before a record reaches the crate, side A gets played at the listening bar, start to finish. If it skips, the grade changes before the price does.

Any record in the crate can go back on the bar turntable before you buy it. Just ask.

  6. Stop 6 Bring again

    And around it comes.

Done with something you bought here? Bring it back with the sticker still on. We re-grade it on the same card and pay at least the credit rate for its grade.

Then it starts again at stop 1, and someone else takes it home.

The repair bench

Turntables only, by the front window

Turntables come in dusty, humming or dead quiet. We open them up on the bench by the window, where you can watch if you like.

How a repair goes

A straight line, on purpose. Unlike a record, a repair has an end.

  1. Drop off Bring the dust cover and the power cord. We tag it at the counter.
  2. Bench check Within two business days. The fault goes on the tag.
  3. A call We call with a price. Nothing is touched until you say yes.
  4. The fix Usually that same week. Parts on order are named on the quote.
  5. Test side One full album side at the bar, start to finish.
  6. Pick up It goes home with a card listing what we did.

Flip it over.

Side B is the evening: the bar out back, the orange door on Spindle Street, the questions people ask at the counter, and a way to write to us.

Asked at the counter

Liner notes, more or less

Can I sell just one record?

Yes. Walk in with it. One record goes around the loop the same way four hundred do.

How do you decide what to pay?

The grade card, and what that pressing last sold for here. Cash is 40% of the shelf price, store credit is 55%. The numbers are on a slip before you decide.

What if I don't like the offer?

Take the record home. There's no charge for the look, and no hard feelings at the counter.

Do you take records with water damage or mold?

We'll look, but usually not. Mold spreads through a crate. We can tell you whether a cleaning is worth trying at home.

Can I hear a record before I buy it?

Yes, at the listening bar, any record in the crate. We play a whole side, so bring a little time.

Do you ship records?

No. Everything is in the shop, and every copy is the one on the sticker.

Can I bring my own record to the bar?

On Wednesdays, one each, for open decks. The rest of the week the bar plays the crate.

Is the bar all ages?

Until 8 pm, with a grown-up. Saturday afternoon is for the smallest listeners.
