IHow we compose

Every perfume starts as a walk.

One route, walked after dark for a month of nights, with a notebook and a flashlight. The perfume follows the walk in order, so what you smell first on skin is what you met first on the path.

  1. The first corner

    becomes the top notes

What hits you at the gate: cold air, citrus peel, wet slate. Bright and quick; on skin it’s gone in about twenty minutes.

  2. The long middle

    becomes the heart

The smells that walk beside you: fig leaves over a wall, rope, a bakery lighting its ovens. The heart carries the evening, three to five hours.

  3. The front door

    becomes the base

Home: wool, wood smoke, warm skin. The base is what’s still on your scarf in the morning.

From the notebookHeron Stair

May 14 · 1:40 am · 48 °F, wind off the river

Rain stopped at midnight. Fig tree hanging over the wall at the top: leaves, not fruit. Reeds cut yesterday, very green.

Halfway down, cold water, like a stone from a stream. Somebody’s lime, from a glass left on the bench.

Bottom step: mud, moss, cedar from the boathouse.

Field notes become the formula for No. 3, Heron Stair.

IIThe six walks

Six walks. Follow the waymarks through each.

Pick a walk, then step through it. The fog lifts one layer at a time, the way the perfume opens on skin. Every scent comes as 50 ml ($118) or 15 ml ($46), and all six are in the discovery set.

No. 1 · Walked at 11:40 pm in October

Sea Wall, Low Tide

Along the sea wall to the Point, when the tide is out and the harbor smells of stone. Clean, cold and quietly mineral.

  1. Top the first 20 minutes

Sea salt, grapefruit pith, cold air

The first gust off the water as you leave the lamps behind.

  2. Heart through the evening

    Wet slate, samphire, orris root

Halfway along, the wall is still damp from the afternoon.

  3. Base on your scarf next morning

    Driftwood, ambrette seed, clean musk

At the Point, the bleached timbers of the old jetty.

No. 2 · Walked at 9:15 pm in December

Lamplighter’s Lane

The lane behind the chandlery, where the lamps are still lit by hand. Warm, smoky and a little sweet, like a coat that stood near a fire.

  1. Top the first 20 minutes

Bitter orange peel, clove, black pepper

A crate of peel behind the café, and the cold that sharpens everything.

  2. Heart through the evening

    Beeswax, warm brass, orris butter

The chandlery window: candles, polished fittings, a heater left on.

  3. Base on your scarf next morning

    Birch smoke, benzoin, vanilla

A chimney somewhere up the hill. It stays on wool for days.

No. 3 · Walked at 1:40 am in May

Heron Stair

The stone steps down to the reed beds, just after the rain. Green and cool, a little muddy in the best way.

  1. Top the first 20 minutes

Green fig, cut reeds, lime leaf

The fig tree hanging over the wall at the top of the stair.

  2. Heart through the evening

Fig leaf, violet leaf, river water

Halfway down, the reeds close in and the town goes quiet.

  3. Base on your scarf next morning

    Vetiver, oakmoss, cool cedar

The last step, where the river meets the stone by the boathouse.

No. 4 · Walked at 12:10 am in March

The Last Ferry

On deck for the last crossing to Gray Holm. Black tea from a flask, cold brass rails, tarred rope. Our biggest, longest-lasting scent.

  1. Top the first 20 minutes

    Black tea, cardamom, cold metal

The flask unscrewed as the engine starts.

  2. Heart through the evening

Hemp rope, tobacco leaf, dark rose

The coiled lines by the rail, wet with spray.

  3. Base on your scarf next morning

    Tarred wood, labdanum, tonka

The deck boards, and the warm cabin when you give in and go below.

No. 5 · Walked at 2 am in July

Glasshouse, 2 am

The old botanic glasshouse on Wick Lane, vents open on a hot night. Heady and green; the flowers are louder after dark.

  1. Top the first 20 minutes

    Tomato leaf, galbanum, bergamot

The potting benches just inside the door.

  2. Heart through the evening

    Night jasmine, tuberose, warm soil

The center house, where the night flowers open.

  3. Base on your scarf next morning

Sandalwood, white musk, a little honey

The iron frame, still holding the heat of the day.

No. 6 · Walked at 10:30 pm in September

Windfall Orchard

The path through the old orchard on Sallow Hill, the long way home. Pears in the grass, smoke from the community gardens.

  1. Top the first 20 minutes

Windfall pear, cider apple, cold air

The orchard gate, and the first bruised pears underfoot.

  2. Heart through the evening

    Hay, chamomile, woodsmoke

Bonfires in the community gardens, banked down for the night.

  3. Base on your scarf next morning

    Oak, suede, soft amber

Your own front door, and the warm room behind it.

Map of Hollowmere harbor and the six waymarks The atelier is on Gloaming Quay, near the middle of the harbor. The walk runs west to the sea wall, back along the Rope Walk, east to Heron Stair and the reed beds, out along the ferry pier, up Wick Lane to the glasshouse, over Sallow Hill through the orchard, and home.

VIQuestions

Plain answers, no fog.

Anything else, call 555-0118 or write to hello@waymark.example and we will answer before the atelier opens.

How long does a Waymark perfume last?

Six to ten hours on most skin. Sea Wall and Glasshouse sit closer and fade sooner, around five or six; The Last Ferry lasts past ten. Every base note stays on wool for days.

What’s in them?

Mostly natural materials, plus a few modern ones for things nature can’t bottle, like cold metal or wet stone. The full list, allergens included, is printed on every box and in each scent’s notes above.

What does shipping cost, and how fast is it?

Discovery sets ship free in a flat tin that fits any mailbox and arrive in 2 to 4 business days. Bottles ship for $6, free over $150. We only ship within the country for now.

Can I return a perfume?

Unopened bottles within 30 days, for a full refund. Opened, and it isn’t you? Tell us within 14 days and we’ll swap it for another scent, once.

Do you refill bottles?

Yes. Bring back a 50 ml bottle and we refill it for $96. The glass is heavy and the cap is solid brass; they are made to be kept.

Are the perfumes for men or for women?

For whoever is walking home. We don’t label them either way.
